What are the different brace systems?

Ceramic Braces: The aesthetic option for conventional, fixed braces and made with porcelain. Excellent for mild to moderate malocclusions. They are tooth coloured so less noticeable.

Metallic Braces: Conventional, fixed braces made with metal. The wires are held into the bracket with elastics and metallic ligatures, indicated for mild to severe malocclusions.

Self-ligating Braces: Low friction braces. They are faster, more comfortable and produce more expansion than conventional braces, reducing, in many cases, the necessity for extractions, indicated for mild to severe malocclusions.

Invisalign – removable braces. Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that helps to straighten teeth without the use of the fixed, metal braces. It involves wearing a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that help shift your teeth into the proper position. Patients who would have never considered braces before are now having this treatment because the aligners are almost invisible.

Lingual Braces (Incognito): These braces are fitted to the inner surface of the teeth and are the gold standard in invisible orthodontics.

Orthodontics FAQs

Here are some answers to the most commonly asked questions from people considering orthodontic treatment.

HOW LONG DO I WEAR BRACE?

The treatment time may vary between 12 and 30 months. It will depend on the kind of malocclusion that you have and the type of braces you will wear. Normally the treatment takes between 18-24 months with the conventional braces. With Self-ligated braces the treatment time is typically shorter (6 months shorter than conventional braces).

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ORTHODONTICS?

The treatment time may vary between 12 and 30 months. It will depend on the kind of malocclusion that you have and the type of braces you will wear. • A nice smile is not only beautiful, it also promotes good health. Straight and evenly spaced teeth are easier to keep clean, resulting in better oral health.
  • Properly aligned teeth chew more efficiently, which may help digestion.
Aligned teeth create a better bite, which may reduce stress, headaches, and strain on your supporting bone and tissue.
  • According to the American Association of Orthodontists, crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This may contribute to conditions that cause not only tooth decay but may lead to gum disease and tooth loss.
  • When left untreated, many minor orthodontic problems may become worse, contributing to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing, excessive stress on gum tissue, and misalignment of the jaw joints. This can all lead to chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck.
  • Treatment by a specialist to correct minor orthodontic issues are often less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years. So, no matter what age you are it is never too early (over the age of 10 ) or too late to invest in braces and ultimately invest in yourself.
DOES IT HURT?

You will feel discomfort on the days of having the braces tightened once a month. Once again it will depend on the difficulty of your case. The new orthodontics appliances ensure greater comfort throughout treatment. With the self-ligated braces the forces applied are lighter and is far more comfortable.

WILL I NEED TEETH PULLED?

If your teeth are too crooked you might need to have some teeth taken out. With conventional braces, orthodontists are often forced to pull teeth in order to create space for crowded teeth. With the use of self-ligated braces there is more chance to treat your case without extraction but there are cases which always require extraction. The space is made to improve facial balance and symmetry to provide a natural smile and profile.
