It’s a little known fact that 90% of the population will suffer from some kind of oral health disease in their lifetime.

Oral health is often forgotten or ignored until a person suffers from pain/bleeding/bad breath or any other form of oral disease. Most of these can be avoided if timely and proper oral care is taken.

Why oral health is important?

Oral health is a key indicator of our overall well being and is a key factor in how we smile, speak and behave. It’s been proved to have a major influence on a person’s overall confidence, happiness and quality of life.

So, whether you’re a child or adult, good oral health is extremely important, some say critical, to your general health and well-being.

Oral problems of any kind should be treated immediately. Unfortunately, many people are in the habit of ignoring or delaying any decisions or actions to alieviate early symptoms of oral health problems. The rule in dentistry is the quicker you act the better the outcome. Delay often means the problem get worse which means more pain, discomfort and a knock-on effect to other health issues. It also means the financial cost to treat the oral heralth issue is often increased. So, at the first sign of any oral health problems developing don’t ignore the symptoms and consult your dentist immediately.

Types of oral health issues commonly found:

  • Tooth Decay also known as cavities or caries.
  • Gum Disease (Periodontal)
  • Broken or Crooked Teeth
  • Missing Teeth
  • Bleeding gums
  • Dry Mouth
  • Oral Cancer

Poor oral hygiene has also been linked to life threatening diseases like diabetes, mouth cancer and heart disease.

Tips to keep your teeth healthy and keep oral disease at bay:

  • Brushing your teeth with fluoride tooth paste (twice a day)
  • Floss once a day
  • Having a well balanced diet including vegetables and fruits
  • Reduce intake of sugar or sugary foods. If you do fancy some sugary foods, try to eat it as part of a meal rather than snacking in between meals
